POOF’s Riddles

Below are some of POOF’s favorite riddles.  (POOF was assisted in choosing these by Frank; full name: “Smoldering Descendent of the Great Wyrm Dragons,” but she prefers Frank.  Hey, even dragons want to be cool when they aren’t breathing fire!)

The Answers are below each riddle, but written in white so that you will not accidentally see them if you are trying to solve the riddle.  To see the answers, use your cursor to highlight the space after the word “Answer” following each riddle.

There will eventually be at least 24 riddles, so check back from time to time to see what has been added.

1. What is it that you can keep after giving it to someone else?

Answer: Your word

2. What is it that you will break even when you name it?

Answer:  Silence

3. What always runs but never walks, often murmurs, never talks, has a bed but never sleeps, has a mouth but never eats?

Answer:  A River

 
4. The more you have of it, the less you see. What is it?

Answer:  Darkness

5. The more you take, the more you leave behind. What are they?

Answer:  Footsteps

6. Runs smoother than any rhyme, loves to fall but cannot climb!

Answer:  Water

7. You feed it, it lives, you give it something to drink, it dies.

Answer:  A fire

8. A box without hinges, lock or key, yet golden treasure lies within. What is it?

Answer:  An egg

9. Each morning I appear
To lie at your feet,
All day I will follow
No matter how fast you run,
Yet I nearly perish In the midday sun.
What am I?

Answer:  Your Shadow

10. Until I am measured
I am not known,
Yet how you miss me
When I have flown.

Answer:  Time

11. What has roots that nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
Yet it never grows?

Answer:  A Mountain

12. It’s been around for millions of years, but it’s no more than a month old. What is it?

Answer:  The Moon

13. Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking.

Answer:  A Fish

14. You saw me where I never was and where I could not be. And yet within that very place, my face you often see. What am I?

Answer:  A Reflection

15. Where i may rest and you may not,
upon my hord of gems and gold,
where dragons eggs stay nice and warm,
my house, my home,
my hall of old.
What is it?

Answer:  Dragon’s Lair

16. What happens when you throw a yellow rock into a purple stream?

Answer:  It makes a splash.

17. I am always hungry,
I must always be fed,
The finger I lick
Will soon turn red.

Answer:  Fire

18.  Three lives have I.
Gentle enough to soothe the skin,
Light enough to caress the sky
Hard enough to crack rocks.

Answer:  Water

19.  Say my name and I disappear. What am I?

Answer:  Silence


20. You heard me before,
Yet you hear me again,
Then I die,
‘Till you call me again.

Answer:  An Echo

21.  Who are the two brothers who live on opposite sides of the road yet never see each other?

Answer:  Eyes

22. The part of the bird
that is not in the sky,
which can swim in the ocean
and always stay dry.
What is it?

Answer:  It’s Shadow


23.  I have a little house in which I live all alone. It has no doors or windows, and if I want to go out I must break through the wall.

Answer:  Dragon (or chicken) in an egg

24. It cannot be seen,
it cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard,
cannot be smelt,
Lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.

Answer:  Darkness

25. All about, but cannot be seen,
Can be captured, cannot be held
No throat, but can be heard.

Answer:  Noises or Sounds

    1. Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you liked them. There are more, but I haven’t had time to post them yet. I will try to improve the wording in the intro to make it easier to find the answers.
